Brirtish teenager Heather Watson made former world number one Maria Sharapova work hard for a first round victory with an impressively gutsy performance. The 19-year-old from Guernsey, who won the girls’ title at Flushing Meadow in 2009, won the first set and almost matched the Russian in the second before being squeezed out 6-3 5-7 3-6.It had nevertheless been a US Open debut to remember for the Briton, who made far fewer unforced errors than her more illustrious opponent, whose loud victory celebrations were proof of her relief at avoiding an unheralded exit.Watson held serve to win the first game and then made her intentions of upsetting the odds crystal clear by breaking the number three seed to love.
The 2006 champion responded by breaking back immediately but Watson was working the wings powerfully and broke the Russian once again thanks to a double fault free gift.Watson steamed full speed ahead to lead 4-1, clinching the game with a monster forehand, and although Maria Sharapova held serve two more times she was unable to prevent the world number 102 from taking the first set 6-3.Maria Sharapova was thoroughly rattled and tossed away the first game of the second set with a wild forehand to gift Watson an instant break. That cranked the Maria Sharapova shriek into overdrive and Watson was unable to prevent her from biffing a break back with some brutal hitting.Watson was more than happy to slug it out and the crowd at the Arthur Ashe court were liking what they were seeing from the debutant but Sharapova had found her range now and was attacking relentlessly.Watson soon found herself 4-1 down but any hopes Sharapova harboured that the Briton would surrender the set meekly disappeared when the lead was cut to 4-3, with another double fault helping the underdog break back. The teenager held her own serve – just – to level at 4-4 and Sharapova knew the tie was now in a critical phase. The applause was watson’s when she not only reached a drop shot but placed her return so close to the baseline that Sharapova could only lob long but the Russian held serve to put the pressure back on her inexperienced opponent.Yet Watson recovered from 0-30 down via some epic lung-stretching exchanges to hold serve but Sharapova produced successive power forehands to force the teenager to serve to save the set. That she was unable to do and the momentum now appeared to be with the Russian, who took the first game of the third set to love. The next game lasted nine minutes as Watson dug in stubbornly but again Sharapova came out on top and the end now very much appeared to be in sight.Still the underdog fought on however and Watson somehow conjured up the energy to break again to draw closer at 3-4. Maria Sharapovaweathered the storm however and went on to take the final set 6-3.
Yulia Putintseva defeats Marcela Zacarias in Women Singles 1st round – US Open 2011
Russian women singles Yulia Putintseva over threw Mexican Marcela Zacarias in the opening round match of the women singles draw at the US Open 2011. Both players duelled on hard courts of USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Putintseva won the match by bouncing back from a set down to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in 2 hours.
The players were meeting for the first time and were unfamiliar with each other’s style and skill. Opening the first round was the Russian. Unable to win on her serve she was broken in the first game by Zacarias, who then went on to winning on her serve and took a 2-0 lead. In the next six games both the players won on alternate serves and at this point the score board read as 5-3. It was Putintseva’s serve, while, the Mexican was looking to bag a game and serve the first set. As the Russian served, Zacarias took the opportunity to break her adversary for the last time and bagged the initial set.
Although, the Russian was a stronger player, she did not have a strong defence and was unable to ward off the Mexican. On the contrary, Zacarias had committed zero unforced errors, a geometric precision and was able to avail most of the break point opportunities. She did not setup a break point opportunity for the Russian and hence, won the set with a 6-3 score.
During the second set, Zacarias was first to serve. In the first three games she took the lead with a 3-0 by breaking her opponent in the second game and by winning on her serves. Putintseva was not ready to throw in the towel, jumping back into the game; she managed to win on her serve and went on to breaking her Mexican adversary in the fifth. By the sixth game, seeded 6 Putintseva evened the score to 3-3 and in the seventh she broke the Russian for the last time to take a lead at 4-3. She then went on t o securing her lead in the eighth game by holding her serve. Although, Zacarias had won on her serve in the ninth game, by the tenth Putintseva was serving for the set. The score could’ve gone either way if the Russian’s defence hadn’t strengthened but fortunately for the Russian she held her serve and bagged her first set victory.
By the end of the second set, both the players had bagged a set apiece each and were looking to stay in the tournament. Fortunately for women singles Putintseva, she was performing much better than the first set, by minimizing her unforced errors and strengthening her defence.
Opening the concluding set was Zacarias, but in a reversal of fate Zacarias was broken in the first game. The sixth seed then broke her rival in the third and held her serve in fourth to secure a 4-0 lead. In the following four games both players won on alternate serves but it was a little too late for Zacarias to start catching up and fortunately for women singles Putintseva she held her serve in the last game to serve the match at 6-2.
A runner up here last year, Putintseva saw an easy victory against the un-seeded Marcela Zacarias and was able to secure a berth in the second round where she will play local wildcard entrant, Samantha Crawford.
In what should probably be taken as another example of the weirdly sexual build up to next year’s Russian elections, a man has touched 1,000 Russian girls breasts for Vladimir Putin.
Why? We don’t really understand. After touching all the breasts, he then meets Prime Minister Putin and shakes his hand, somehow passing the breast touching experience onto him (or something like that).
Sam Nickel, the man touching the breasts, has explained it wasn’t all so easy in an interview:
The touching itself – it is certainly nice, but you imagine that 1,000 Russian girls – it’s only about 15-20% of the Russian girls we interviewed. The remaining 5000-7000 Russian girls did not agree. And each asks several questions. Each must be explained. In general, we spent a lot of time and nerves. This was terribly tiring. We burned on the summer sun; we were on feet 8 hours a day. It was the tedious work with breasts, their owners and friends of the owner of the breasts. I saw the breasts in my dreams at night and the dreams came true at daylight. But certainly I didn’t become a gay. I still love breasts.
Over the summer, many Samford students men and girls worked at camps, volunteered locally or even went overseas on mission experiences.According to University Ministries’ records, the extent of Samford students’ influence this summer included more than 35 countries across all six inhabited continents. Many of these mission trips were done independently or through churches not affiliated with the university, but University Ministries did sponsor two trips this year.Samford, in co-sponsorship with Shades Mountain Baptist Church, sent 15 students to Capetown, South Africa for two weeks. The purpose of the trip was to provide AIDS awareness and witness to the youth and families of Capetown.
“We would go door-to-door and talk to these people, just letting them know what was out there,” junior math major Rainbow Arnold said. “The whole experience really changed my perspective. It was really cool being able to provide awareness, and spread the gospel to people that had never heard it before.”
The other mission trip Samford sponsored was a six-week trip to a Muslim country in the Pacific Rim of the 10/40 window. Campus ministers Brian and Renee Pitts accompanied 11 Samford students to the large urban area with the purpose of the trip being to build community among college-age students of different cultural backgrounds. The group worked through a local church to provide a place of comfort and interaction with the local and foreign students.“The girls stayed at a house that was run by the church as a house for female students who came from other countries,” junior music major Sarah Cole said. “Our goal was to build relationships through the outlet of the church’s community studio.”The studio offered many community-building opportunities for everyone, including wireless Internet and a vast array of social activities. The most effective activity that Samford students participated in was a process called “English chat clubs,” groups that met weekly to just talk. The purpose of the clubs was to encourage English communication among the students, whose primary language is not English. There were also nights in which students were able to share drawings, photographs and written art, with the purpose of discovering the commonalities between the different backgrounds.
“There’s one guy who spoke Russian, and he was struggling with writing and rhyming in English,” Cole said. “He wrote us a poem in English, and he also wrote a poem in Russian, which he explained to us what it meant. We got to experience something that was important to him, yet we still got to teach him something that was important to us.”For Christian students visiting a Muslim country, there is quite a distinct difference in cultures. Samford’s team did not aim to change this difference, but only to better understand it.“We wanted to know the stories of these Muslim men and girls,” Cole said.“They all asked us about Christianity. They have been taught that it is wrong, but they wanted to know why we thought it was right,” Cole said. “We got to share with them why Jesus Christ was so important in our lives.”At the end of the six weeks, the team returned home. The relationships they formed, though, are still strong. The Samford team learned just as much as the people they traveled to reach.
